How to Read Sheet Music

Discover Centuries of Music from Around the World

How to read sheet music is a skill that musicians from all walks of life have. Some argue it’s helpful; some say it’s too limited

What the latter don’t realize is that there’s more than one form of music notation, and many forms (like tablature) are much older than realize.

In How to Read Sheet Music, you’ll not only learn how to read traditional staff notation, you’ll also learn the logic behind notation, explore other types of notation, and open up centuries of musical experiences for yourself.

Along the way, you’ll learn some music fundamentals, so if you’re at all curious about how music works and why it makes us feel the way it does, then this course is a great first step to exploring your interests in music.

The course is completely free and has tons of resources that you can use to help you create your own music or to teach it further down the road.

What’ the Time Commitment?

Learning to read sheet music is a little more involved than spending your day scrolling through social media, but it doesn’t have to be harder than your toughest math class!

How to Read Sheet Music is self-paced, but if you spend a little time each day on it, you can easily complete the course in a week. There is around 4 hours of video content and exercises to match, so you can easily complete it in about 10 hours total.

I use a lot of analogies, examples, and give you the chance to practice along the way, courtesy of musictheory.net. That way, you can avoid frustration as you learn. It’s much better than sitting with a book because you’ll see how easy it is to create your own music along the way too!

You’ll have access to a course forum, where you and other students can ask and answer each others’ questions, and you can email me any time throughout the course. And as always, there’s a growing list of Resources and terms on the Glossary page for other concepts that may come up along the way.
